It was on a later hairy sailing voyage with his Dad trying to make the Isles of Scilly that he was given a serious talking to between dodging waves.
‘Unless he got into a profession by the time he was twenty he would be in overalls for the rest of his life.’ The advice was heeded and Roger got a job in an advertising agency as a trainee in the creative department. His crazy doodles for which he was always known as he was always drawing and sketching, came to fruition! It wasn’t long before he was creating the most ‘off the wall’ ads the agency had ever witnessed, culminating in a famous national ad campaign.

The  tail end of the then National Service finally caught up and Roger was enlisted in the armed forces, but instead of being sent off to maraud the seven seas in the Navy, he was despatched to Aldershot for basic training in the British Army and then posted to Intelligence at Middle East Land Forces HQ.

Sergeant Murray as he then was put this obscure posting down to his experience in the advertising agency as the so called intelligence was little more than a desert based ad agency. Apart from maps and top secret things it was mainly producing posters for regimental football matches, Brigadiers Ball’s and such. But things soon changed. The unit was put on to an active service footing and Intelligence suddenly became real intelligence! Roger was given a war substantive commission as a civilian on intelligence surveillance in the Middle East.. Right up his street!
