In 2009, Roger as first mate sailed the 150 ton, ex STA three masted schooner Malcolm Miller from Geonoa back to Southampton with a force nine off Gibraltar and a rough crossing of Biscay.
He also
crewed with his old friend James Wharram (of catamaran fame) to sail his 80ft catamaran after circumnavigating the world, together with James’s wife Henneke and joined by another famous sailor Tom Cunnliffe, they didn’t get far as there was little wind, but as Roger says. Great company on a sparkling blue sea. What could be better!

Last year he attempted a transatlantic with two old sailing mates. They had taken on a delivery trip, sailing an ex racing sloop from Gibraltar to Antigua. Off the African coast they got into difficulties in bad weather with rigging problems and a leaking keel bolt. Putting into Casablanca everything was quickly sorted and off they set again on a direct course across the Atlantic for the West Indies. About three hundred miles out they ran into a gale and heavy seas. The yacht started taking water, again through a keel bolt. When attempting to tighten it the whole thing snapped off, revealing the bolt itself had rusted right through.
An oo’er situation, as the rest of the keel bolts were probably just as bad. After a mug of tea and a bit of thinking they decided to come-about and head back towards the Canaries. Ah well, as Roger concluded. ‘That's life!’
